Silver is a noble metal that naturally oxidizes and tarnishes over time by reacting with sulfur and moisture in the air. However, this tarnish (patina) on antique silver often reflects the character and history of the piece. So, how should you clean your silver without damaging its texture?
1. Avoid Harsh Chemicals
Modern, abrasive silver polishers or acidic solutions sold in markets create microscopic scratches on the surface of your antique silver. Especially on finely detailed pieces (like filigree or niello), the use of chemicals can fill the crevices and cause permanent damage.
2. Gentle and Natural Cleaning Method
The safest way to polish your old silver is by using warm water, a very small amount of natural soap, and a soft cotton cloth. If the tarnish is very dense, you can prepare a fine paste of baking soda and water, apply it to the surface with very gentle circular motions, then rinse with plenty of warm water and dry immediately.

3. Drying Against Water and Moisture
After silver is washed or wiped, it should never be left wet or damp. After cleaning, gently wipe the piece with an extra soft microfiber cloth or an old flannel fabric until it is completely dry. Water droplets cause new spots on the silver.
4. Proper Storage Conditions
When you are not displaying your silver, you must keep it away from oxygen and moisture. Do not wrap antique silver objects in newspaper or rubber bands (these contain sulfur and accelerate tarnishing). Instead, store them in a dry cabinet wrapped in acid-free paper or special tarnish-preventing cotton covers.
